World leaders gathered in Geneva this week for an emergency summit to address accelerating climate targets after new data revealed sea levels rising faster than projected.
The two-day conference, hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme, brought together representatives from 140 countries, with particular attention on coastal nations facing the most immediate threats from rising waters.
“We are past the point of incremental action,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres in his opening address. “The data we now have demands nothing short of a complete transformation of how we produce and consume energy.”
Key Commitments
Several major economies announced new pledges during the summit’s opening session, including accelerated timelines for phasing out coal power and increased funding for climate adaptation in developing nations.
The European Union pledged an additional €50 billion toward the Global Climate Fund, while a coalition of Pacific island nations called for binding commitments rather than voluntary targets.
Negotiations are expected to continue through Friday, with a joint communiqué planned for release this weekend.
